The Media Library holds every image you add to Shogun. From one place you can upload images, find them, edit them, and set their names, alt text and tags. Alt text is saved with the image, so a change applies on every page that uses it.

From the dashboard, go to Content Library > Media in the left sidebar.

In the editor, select an Image element and click Select image, either on the element or in the settings panel. The image picker opens with three tabs:

Click Upload, or drag images onto the upload tile at the start of the grid (you can also click it to browse). The Upload media window has two tabs: Upload to drag in or browse for a file, and Add a link to paste an image URL.

Once a file is added, the window shows a preview, the Name, Alternative text and Tags fields, and the file size and dimensions. Fill these in, then click Upload. With AI alt text (see below), the alt text is already filled in for you; check it and change it if it isn't right.

The Media Library supports JPG, static PNG, WebP, SVG and animated GIF files.

Note: editing an SVG with Edit image turns it into a non-vector image, so make any changes to SVGs before you upload them.

Type a name into Search media library to find an image. The sort menu orders images Alphabetically, by Recently Edited or by Recently Created, in either direction.

Each image card shows:

Click Filter by to show the filters:

The button shows how many filters are applied, and Clear All removes them. Two handy checks: Alt Text > Is blank finds every image still missing alt text, and Usage > Unused finds images you can delete.

Click an image, or choose View from its menu, to open its page. Here you can change the Name and Alternative text, see the file size and dimensions, add Tags, and see the pages it's Used on, with links to each. In the editor, Image details on the Image element opens the same details.

Alt text describes the image for screen readers and search engines. It's saved with the image, not with the page, so it applies everywhere the image is used. When you save new alt text for an image that's on pages, Shogun asks you to confirm. The pages that use it are marked Outdated until you publish them, unless you turn on Automatically publish affected pages.

With AI alt text, new uploads get alt text written for them, and the button next to Alternative text writes a description for an existing image. The button replaces any text already in the field, and nothing is saved until you click Save. Some file types can't be described this way; the button says so when you hover over it.

Click Add tag on an image's page to tag it, for example by campaign or product line. Use the Tags filter to find tagged images.

Tick the images you want, or tick the box at the top to select them all, then open Bulk actions. Edit image details opens one window with the Name, Alternative text and Tags for each selected image; click Done to save. Delete deletes the selected images.

Choose Edit from an image's menu, or Edit image on the Image element in the editor, to crop, rotate or flip the image. Saving an edit creates a new image in the Media Library; the original stays as it was.

When you edit from the Image element, the element switches to the new image and its Image Quality and Responsive image settings change, so check them afterwards. See How to add images using the Image Element for the editing tools.

Delete an image from its menu, or with the Delete button on its page. You can only delete images with a page count of 0. If the image is still on a page, Shogun shows You can only delete images that have a 0 page count with a link to the pages that use it. Remove the image from those pages first.

The page count comes from each page's most recent save. Restoring an older version from Page versions doesn't update it. So after a restore, an image can show as used on a page that no longer has it, or the other way round. To fix this, open the page, make any small change and save it. You don't need to publish; the count updates when the page is saved.

Deleting an image doesn't break older page versions that use it. If you restore one of those versions, the image still shows on the page, but you can't open its details or edit it in the editor. To change its alt text, upload the image again and select it in the Image element.

Why can't I delete my image from the Media Library?

Only images with a page count of 0 can be deleted. Remove the image from the pages that use it, then save those pages. If the count still shows a page that no longer has the image, see Page counts and page versions.

Why can't I see filters, tags or bulk editing?
