With about 2 billion active users, Instagram is the third-most popular social media network. About one out of every four people in the entire world is on this platform.

Indeed, there is likely a lot of overlap between this vast user base and the pool of people who could potentially place an order on your store.

This is why 79% of marketing professionals now integrate Instagram into their digital marketing campaigns — and you would be wise to not only participate in marketing on the platform, but to create a customized shopper journey for the traffic coming from the platform.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to create Instagram landing pages on Shopify that will maximize the conversion rate of this value traffic source.

Creating a Landing Page for Instagram Traffic with Shogun

In case you didn’t know already, a landing page is a standalone page that’s designed for a specific marketing campaign. By sending campaign traffic to a landing page rather than your homepage or the default page for a product or service, you can tailor the page’s design and messaging to the specific audience you’re targeting, which will likely lead to a higher conversion rate and more sales.

Shogun provides you with all the tools you need to create and manage your Instagram landing pages on Shopify:

Importing a page

First of all, if you already created a landing page in Shopify that you would now like to edit on Shogun, you can do so by quickly importing the page over:

  • After downloading and installing Shogun, select the “Apps” option in the left sidebar of the Shopify control panel.
  • Open Shogun.
  • Go to the “Pages” section of the Shogun app. Here you’ll see two tabs: “Shogun” and “Shopify”. Select “Shopify”.
  • Use the search bar or filtering options (or simply scroll down) to find the page you want to import, then click on the “Import page” button next to that page.
It's easy to import your Instagram landing pages from Shopify into Shogun.

Editing a page

Once you’ve imported a landing page into Shogun, go to the “Pages” section of the Shogun app and click on it whenever you’re ready to make your edits — this will open up the page in Shogun’s visual editor.

Shogun’s visual editor allows you to fully customize your landing pages.

The visual editor offers a number of useful tools for Instagram landing page design, including:

  • Element library: Choose from a variety of elements, including text, images, video, and much more, to add to your landing page. You can place each element wherever you want on the page, and you can fully customize the content and design of these elements as well.
  • Block library: Blocks are essentially multiple elements bundled together into one pre-made chunk of content. They allow you to save time by adding fairly complex features such as product sliders, value props, and FAQ sections with just a couple clicks.
  • Shogun Insights: Before you publish your landing pages, you can use Shogun Insights to make sure there aren’t any issues that you should correct first. On a scale of 0 to 100, this tool will grade your page on Accessibility, Best Practices, Performance, and SEO. And if the score in any of these categories is less than 100, Shogun will tell you exactly what you need to do to fix it.

Creating Personalized Experiences for Instagram with URL Segmentation

In addition to building a landing page from scratch, you could also create the same effect by publishing an alternate version of an existing page for your Instagram campaign traffic:

  • Create a UTM tag for your campaign.
  • When setting up the link on Instagram that will send people to your store, add this UTM tag to the end of your page’s URL.
  • Open the page you want to customize in Shogun’s visual editor.
  • Click on the “Personalization” button located near the top-right corner of your screen.
  • Select “Turn on personalization”.
  • In the “Segment shoppers by:” section of the personalization settings, select “Referrer”.
  • Change the “Came directly from” option to “UTM”, and then add the UTM tag for your Instagram campaign into the appropriate field.
  • This will create a new variant of the page in Shogun’s visual editor. Edit each variant as needed, then publish your personalized experience.
You can create and publish multiple versions of the same landing page in Shogun.

Once you’ve completed these steps, the alternate variant you designed will only be shown to Instagram campaign traffic, while everyone else will still see the original version of the page.

There are a variety of ways that you could use this feature for your visitors from Instagram, such as:

  • Paid Instagram ads: If you’re promoting an exclusive offer in your Instagram ads, such as free shipping or 50% off, you could highlight this offer on the alternate variant of the page while not mentioning it on the original version in order to avoid confusion.
  • Organic Instagram traffic: Compared to the average online shopper, Instagram users are disproportionately young, female, and liberal — you may want to adjust the content on your store to better appeal to these demographics. In this case, you would use the “URL” condition for your audience segment rather than “Referrer” and include traffic from all URLs that include “instagram.com”.
  • Influencer traffic: If you’ve paid for an influencer to promote your products, you can add a UTM tag to the link that you provide them to use in their post. This will allow you to create a version of the page that mentions the influencer in the description or even features an image or video of the influencer using your project, creating a more seamless transition for the influencer’s followers as they are directed to your page.

Other Powerful Uses of URL Segmentation

It’s worth noting that URL segmentation has many other potential use cases beyond Instagram marketing, including:

  • YouTube traffic: As popular as Instagram is, YouTube is even more so. One thing you certainly know about these visitors is that they like to consume content in a video format, so you could reorganize your page design for them to highlight videos rather than images or text if possible.
  • Pay-per-click ads: PPC ads are only worth the cost if they actually lead to sales. As mentioned above, dedicated landing pages will help increase your conversion rate — that means you’ll get a bigger return on investment from your PPC budget.
  • Email campaigns: Your newsletter subscribers are likely some of your most loyal customers. Using URL segmentation to create ecommerce experiences that are designed specifically for these shoppers will give them even more of a reason to keep buying from your store rather than a competitor.

Overall, Shogun features such as the visual editor and personalized experiences will allow you to make your digital marketing strategy much more successful.
